Russian dramatist and short story writer Anton Chekov is the author of the well-known short story "Vanka."

One of Chekhov's several tales with the subject of a child's familial separation is Vanka. When Anton was fifteen years old, his father relocated his family to Moscow and fled from creditors, separating Anton from his family. Chekhov stayed to complete his education, working to pay for his education and, when he could, sending his family more funds. The difficulties of family separation started to appear frequently in Chekov's literature. In 1886, The Vanka was released on Christmas Day. We have included this fantastic tale in our collection of Christmas tales. Here is a short version of the Vanka sequence.

Summary on Vanka

Vanka, a nine-year-old orphan, was apprenticed to Alyakhin, a shoemaker. He had barely been in Moscow for three months when he arrived to the shoemaker's house. The mistress, as well as the master Alyakhin and other senior apprentices, were nasty to him. Vanka wished for his grandfather, Konstantin Makarich, to come to his aid and save him from the master's cruelty. He made the decision to write a secret letter to his grandfather, explaining his plight and pleading with him to come and help him. Vanka waited until the master and others had gone to church on Christmas Eve before going to bed. He then pulled a bottle of ink, a rusty pen, and a crumpled sheet of paper from the closet to compose a note. He was terrified, and he checked the door and window several times before beginning to write the letter to ensure that no one was observing him.
Vanka's grandpa, Konstantin Makarich, worked at Zhivarev's estate as a night watchman. He was a short, skinny, sixty-five-year-old man who hung out with the cooks and kitchen maids. Kashtanka and Eel were two of I-dogs. le's After Vanka's mother Pelageya died, he sent him to Moscow to learn how to make shoes. Vanka's existence at the shoemaker's house in Moscow, on the other hand, was worse than a dog's. He wasn't getting enough food or sleep. Alyakhin once beat Vanka with a stirrup-strap because he fell asleep while rocking their kid. The mistress wiped the head of a herring on his face on another occasion. The other apprentices teased him, forced him to steal the master's cucumber, and sent him to a tavern to buy vodka. Vanka witnessed children selling fishing hooks, shops selling all kinds of weaponry, and butcheries selling meat from hunted birds and animals in Moscow, which was a major city. Vanka was thinking about cutting and decorating the Christmas tree and other activities in his village when he wrote the letter. I le recalled joyful times with his mother and his favourite Olga lgnatyevna, who taught him to read, write, count to a hundred, and dance the quadrille. Vanka pleaded with his grandfather to come and help him from his tribulations;
He offered to assist him as well as pray for him. He finished the letter and addressed it to Konstantin Makarich, 'Grandfather in the Village,' and tossed it in the mailbox. Then he went to sleep, hoping that his grandfather would come and take him back to the village. He had a dream about his grandfather sitting on a stove ledge, reading the letter to the cooks.
The reader is also given a unique perspective on Vanka's grandfather, who, despite Vanka's respect for him, is never depicted in a truly ethical or moral light, but rather appears to become increasingly bizarre and maybe irresponsible. Readers may be left wondering why he never adopted Vanka in the first place, which increases their scepticism of him. In truth, following his mother's death, Vanka is initially assigned to work in the kitchen in order to be near his grandfather, but is later transferred to a shoemaker in Moscow.
