The poet makes it abundantly apparent that having a stammer is not a "handicap." Instead, it is referred to as a "style of speech" by poet K Satchidanandan. The poem was influenced by EMS Namboodiripad, an Indian communist leader. The leader said, "No, I stammer just when I talk," when a journalist joked about whether he stutters always. The poet also makes a nuanced parallel between speech lameness and speech stammering.

Chapter 3 Stammer (Poem)

 Summary

The great poet and critic K. Sachidanandan wrote the thought-provoking poem "Stammer" in both Malayalam and English. As the father of Modern Malayalam Literature, he is highly recognised. Stammer originally wrote the poem under the pen name "Vikku" in the Malayalam language, and he later translated it into English.

The poem's central idea is Stammer seen from a different angle. The poet views stammering as a form of speaking rather than a disability. Like word and deed, word and meaning are not the same. A word's meaning is not predetermined. The one listening or speaking is the one who gives words multiple meanings. Even a linguist would find it challenging to examine and explain the origins of stammering.
The beginning of it would have been the creation of man. The meaning we convey to a listener when we stammer differs from its exact meaning. Stuttering is seen by the poet as a sacrifice to the God of meanings. By using a different utterance of a language, we unknowingly sacrifice it. If everyone stutters, it will become commonplace and eventually might even be regarded as a mother tongue. The poet asserts that during creation, God must have stumbled. He defends this position by pointing out that all human words have varying connotations. Sometimes, we misinterpret rather than correctly understand what people say.
Even society is greatly damaged by it. Perspective differences sometimes cause us to use the same term in different ways when we speak. Thus, words have the power to be both positive and negative. People see our prayers and commands differently because they are different, much like poetry. He contrasts poetry and stuttering. Poet discusses the characteristics of poetry. The poem's suggested meaning may be simple to some individuals, while others may find it difficult to understand and give it alternative meanings.

Plus Two English Stammer Poem Appreciation

"Stammer" is a thought-provoking poem by K Sachidanandan, a well-known poet and critic who writes in Malayalam and English. He is considered a pioneer of modern Malayalam literature. The poem Stammer was originally written in Malayalam entitled “Vikku” and later translated into English by the poet himself.

In this poem, the poet takes stuttering as the main theme. He doesn't treat stuttering as a handicap but as a way of speaking. Word and meaning are as different as word and deed. A word has no fixed meaning. It is the speaker or the listener who attaches different meanings to words. Even for a linguist, it would be difficult to analyze and explain the history of stuttering. It would have started with the creation of man. When we stammer, we give a listener a different meaning than its literal meaning. The poet regards stuttering as a sacrifice to the god of meanings. We unconsciously sacrifice a language by expressing it differently. When all people stutter, it becomes an accepted practice and could later be considered a native language.

The poet says that the god must have stammered at the time of creation. He justifies this argument by saying that all of man's words have different meanings. Sometimes we tend to misinterpret the words of others. Interpretations of these words cause many problems in society. It even causes a lot of destruction in society. Differences in perspectives also cause us to express the same word in different ways. So words can be both constructive and destructive.

We pray and command differently and it appears differently to people like poetry. He compares stuttering to poetry. Poet talks about the nature of poetry. Some people find it easy to understand the implied meaning of a poem, but for others, it looks obscure and finds a different interpretation.
